Volunteer Opportunity

Dear Members of CEA-Retired,

My name is Rachel Massey, and I am a graduate student with the College of Education & Human Ecology at The Ohio State University (OSU).  I am reaching out to you on behalf of one of OSU’s respected community partners, Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services (ETSS).  This young, local 501(c)(3) nonprofit began in 2000 to provide programs and services to adult and youth refugees and immigrants that encourage sustained employment, education, American community integration, and family supportive services.

The Director of ETSS Adult Services, Dr. LeRoy Boikai, has identified two priorities for his organization.  The first is to cultivate additional volunteer streams for adult education programs, and the second is to expand resources for the existing adult program volunteer orientation.  My hope is to facilitate a new community partnership between CEA-Retired and ETSS because of your teaching expertise that could be invaluable to the refugee and immigrant population served by ETSS.

There are multiple ways to collaborate with ETSS.  For example, you may volunteer to assist with ESOL instruction at one of the five Columbus-based sites (click on the webpage here for exact site locations), or you may be more interested in helping to develop sample lesson plans or prepare instructional kits for volunteer ESOL tutors (which could feasibly be done from the comfort of your home)!  It is my understanding the CEA-Retired recently partnered with Somali Bantu Youth Community of Ohio via OEA-R; however, I sincerely hope that you will also consider connecting with OSU’s partners at ETSS.  The students’ consistently high demand for ETSS education services is both a credit to the quality of instruction ETSS provides and makes the structure maintained by ETSS impressive and commendable.

Thank you for taking the time to review this information, and please do not hesitate to contact me or ETSS with questions.  GO BUCKS!

To sign up, contact Dr. LeRoy Boikai at 614-252-5362 x206
